I am in Science, for those who has never been to my profile, it is my passion and profession. We, friends and colleagues in the field, talk about a lot things which sound like waffle to a few, indecipherable and boring to others, and completely an alien language to the rest of who aren’t enthusiasts.
But what really matters sometimes is what only the common man knows, meaning something that is common knowledge, irrespective of your profession.
So, there is one thing, I wondered, how many actually may know or heard of? And I thought where better to ask than this blog that has brought forth so many people from so many spheres. (Professionally though most are in computers)
So, this is what I wanted to ask…
Do you know who is Albert Einstein?
If “No”, it is okay. You may have heard of him, may not know him… it is not a crime.
If “Yes”, I need you to proceed.
Do you know what was Albert Einstein’s major contribution?
If you do, or have a vague idea or at least have an inkling, I need you for this final question :
Have you heard of S. N. Bose or Satyen Bose? Do you know who he is?
There’s no need to look for the answer. Just wanted to know whether people do know him. If you are interested, the information from Wiki can be found here. But please, if you are leaving a comment, leave it before you check the link. It will help me. Thanks a lot. (An Impromptu Just-Like-That Survey :P)
Guria 🙂
P.S. I am back! 🙂 🙂
Satyendra Nath Bose… the great polymath and one of our unsung heros.
Best known for his works on 'Quantam Mechanics' and the 'Bose-Einstein' theory/statistics. The 'Boson' is named after him… as a tribute.
A true disciple of the greats like, Acharya Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose and Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy. Prof. S.N.Bose has worked with the great astrophysicist Dr. Meghnad Saha too. Dr. Saha was the proponent of the 'Saha Equation'.
Sadly all of them are our unsung heros… today.
Over the years.. several scientists… who have worked on Prof S.N. Bose's works have been awarded the coveted Nobel prize (Einstein – the co-creator of the Bose-Einstein Statistics – too has received this honour). But, not Prof. Bose. How very ironic! I guess… nothing can be more ironical than that.
He has many distinguished disciples and students. One of them… Prof. Mani Bhaumik is doing him proud.

Heyy Roshmi,
Thanks… 🙂
But you are one of the enthusiasts and a Bengali! And I will be posting your comment very late! I'll elaborate the purpose in a post, later. Thanks again, girl! 🙂

Hi buddy…..
Yeah, i know both of them as I am from Science background too….primarily because of my association with General Studies.
But I know more about Einstein than Satyen…..may be because of the the intensity of exposure of names….may be because I am more impacted by “Relativity”
Thanks for letting me to read more about Satyen now 🙂

Hey Mahesh,

Hi Dhiman,
I am glad you know SN Bose! Yeah, being a Bengali helps too! 😉
But the 'survey' is for everyone! 😛 😛 😀
Thanks for replying! 🙂

I know Satyen Bose was a physicist, though I don't know the details of his works, which is quite a shame-not as a bengali,or an Indian as a human being for not knowing what fellow beings have contributed to make our lives better. And,Einstein,I know more about his background, the time he lived more than the details of his works-numbers make me itchy, history rocks my socks!

(without looking) of course, albert, but the other two…nope…sorry, not my forte. but that is the beauty of blogging, opening your eyes and ears to things you would other wise be oblivious to 🙂

I can soo relate to the conversations u refered to.. happens to everyone is science I guess.. at times we speak a tongue 'general' people fail to decipher.
So what kinda science do u do? Are you into Biology?
As for the survey, I am completely aware of Einstein and his contribution to the world. However I am a little embarrassed in admitting that although I know Mr. Bose as a famous Indian scientist, I did not have a comprehensive idea about the exceptional contributions he made.

Einstein ? Have read one too many books on him. Satyen Bose, I knew was a scientist of repute but nothing beyond that — quite shameful considering I know more about Amar Gopal Bose than Satyen Bose…

I am a science freak (you already know that) so I think you know my answers too 😀
Dont forget to publish your findings from this survey 🙂

i certainly know Bose ..but I am not sure of his works and so on.maybe i saw the name in equations to find properties of gases,,and that BOSE elementary particle something…that is a pretty sad.Although Einstein happens to be the only scientist i know so much about..becos of the hype you can say,the contributions were also great and some of his quotes are my favorite..BUt if you are trying to prove that INDIAN know everything BUT dont know that they know everything..or INDIANS kno everything but not THEMSELVES…then i agree with you..

Why does it make me grin to think that I studied relativity at 11 and got hyper when I read about BEC (That's Bose-Einstein Condensate for those living in Ignoria) at 13?
Besides, who calls it science? I call it truth.

hey i knew the first two like for sure hmmm but the last i remember vaguely:)…:(…still good survey dear

Guys. I had a lot of fun reading the comments, I am not answering individually YET… the post with the reasons rather than the results will come next week… before, if I don't participate in Blog-a-Ton 5! 🙂
Thanks a lot, buddies!
Kay: SN Bose or Satyan Bose are the same person.. 😉
The West Wind: It happens, both the conversations and not-knowing! 🙂
The fault ain't yours.. 🙂
And I have been in Bio…
Madhu: You know I realised I should call you Madhu-ji… tell me, if you prefer that 😉
And I am interested in that other Bose, too.. 😛
Avada Kedavra: Well, you were one person I was SURE who knows about him… 🙂
Good to have you back, girl!
Narendra: you rarely comment BUT when you do, you come out all-arms!! 😛
Your points are exceptional but my reasons were a bit different 😀
NESQUARX: Your comment comes in later too. Not only you are a Bengali, your “extraordinarily talented”… 😀 😀
Yellow Tulip: Not knowing the third question is a reason behind the survey, that will be divulged later. Thanks 🙂
It seems I actually replied to everyone… 😛 😛

But you know what, you wouldn't be the first person to 🙂 . While growing up, like many a south Indian kids, a surname was not mandatory. An initial on the other hand, was !
So grade school thru engg I was a 'Madhu G' 🙂 .
Where's your B-A-T post Champ ?
