Staying Back

A Conversation with Self (Indecision?)
“You let them stride forward, let them die
You here to survive or give up in a fight?”
Placatory words or empty threats,
Couldn’t budge him from the resting place.
“There was a duty to be done.”
“Please don’t sing that song,
It had already been sung!
Cowards maybe but they are still alive;
Dead are rejoiced but are unmoving
Remembered today, forgotten the next!”
“It’s a done deal, no going back.”
“Staying where you are will get the medal,
To be adorned over your dead mettle
Handed over to your widow
Nothing but a keepsake for the gone,
And you still want to stay on?”
‘I’d die if I stayed alive when the children cry,
Die of shame of running away,
Die of being a fallen warrior.
I’d rather not breathe knowing what I didn’t
I’d rather be dead knowing I gave my best
Of trying to save mankind, and life!
I will stay back, maybe to die,
But not just with a forgotten honor
Maybe in my last ditch try,
There will be one saved life.”

N.B. People usually don’t understand my poetry, it’s not a problem if you don’t either. 🙂 Love, G.:)

I loved the ending-indeed the 'one saved life' makes all the difference in the world rather than some medal of honor.
    Beautifully phrased! 🙂

This poem reminded me of Mark Twain's quote: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.”
I'm more of a prose guy, so usually prefer prose to poetry, but this one was beautiful! Very thought provoking indeed. 🙂

    Hey soin

You are one person I think who will understand it well enough. 🙂

    Hi Mahesh

    Hey Neha-jiii

There's one thing I do better than you, win bets! Not on poetic abilities though (we both know how good we are)! 😉 😀

    Heyy Maverick

    Hi Sammy

Welcome back, dear!! I'm glad you caught the nuances so well, and enjoyed them too! 🙂

    Hiya Karthik

I'm also a complete prose person but with a fascination towards poetry. I appreciate good poetry maybe 'cause I can't write them well-enough! 😀
But you enjoyed it inspite of being a prose person… I must be improving! 😀
    Thanks!! 🙂

I dont know if I understood your view and ideas when you penned this down… but I could feel the urge to fight, to sacrifice, to give away, yet no complain… 😉

    It was a nice read!
